According to data from the National Health Insurance Service (analysis of data from 2013 to 2017), the number of patients with vitamin D deficiency in Korea increased 3.8 times over four years, and the number of female patients is 3.7 times higher than that of males.
The project targets women aged 40 to 60 (first 500 applicants), who will receive free vitamin D testing and, based on the results, receive treatment guidance and be linked to public health services.
The intensive recruitment period is from February 1 to March 30, and citizens who wish to be tested should bring their ID and visit the Jungma Integrated Health Center.
Those diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency will be consistently managed for 3 to 4 months through dietary improvements, exercise, and nutritional supplements, and can revisit the Jungma Integrated Health Center for retesting to check if their condition has improved.
Jo Mi-ok, Director of the Integrated Health Division, said, “Social interest in health promotion is increasing during the menopausal period, which involves many physical and mental changes, and the main symptoms of menopause and vitamin D deficiency are similar,” adding, “This project will help enhance the vitality of menopausal women.”
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient important for our body that helps prevent diseases related to bones and joints, including osteoporosis. It is reported to maintain immune function in the body, reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer, and have a positive effect on preventing depression.
Since vitamin D is synthesized in the body by sufficient exposure to sunlight, it is recommended to take a walk for about 20 minutes a day while avoiding strong ultraviolet rays. Additionally, deficiencies can be supplemented through dietary improvements, nutritional supplements, or injections depending on individual conditions.
