[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Jo] The police have launched an investigation into Kim Eui-gyeom, the spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea, who was additionally accused of stock price manipulation involving First Lady Kim Geon-hee and was reported by the Presidential Office.
According to the police on the 31st, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency assigned the case, in which the Presidential Office filed a complaint against Spokesperson Kim for violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection (defamation), to the Cyber Crime Investigation Division the day before. Based on the complaint, the police plan to thoroughly examine the facts and legality, then proceed with standard investigative procedures such as questioning the complainant.
Earlier, on the 27th, Spokesperson Kim raised additional allegations of stock price manipulation, stating, "It has been revealed that First Lady Kim was involved in another stock price manipulation case following Deutsche Motors," and "In court, through the prosecutor’s statement, it was further revealed that First Lady Kim sold 200,000 shares of Woori Technology." When the Presidential Office’s intention to file a complaint became known, he also expressed his stance by saying he "welcomes it with open arms."
The Presidential Office submitted the complaint to the Seoul Police Agency in the afternoon of the previous day. The Presidential Office argued, "There is no basis whatsoever for the claim that the 'Woori Technology' stock, which Spokesperson Kim alleged, is a 'manipulated stock,'" and added, "It is unacceptable in a 'rule-of-law country' to raise any suspicion and then demand the victim to prove that it is not stock price manipulation."
