[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jung] Mark McGowan, Premier of Western Australia, visited the POSCO Center in Seoul to attend the 'POSCO Group Hydrogen Value Chain Special Exhibition.'
Mark McGowan, Premier of Western Australia, who came to Korea to discuss investment cooperation in hydrogen and critical minerals, visited the POSCO Center in Seoul on the 30th as his first corporate schedule. He toured the 'POSCO Group Hydrogen Value Chain Special Exhibition' and held talks with Choi Jeong-woo, Chairman of POSCO Group. Catherine Raper, Australian Ambassador to Korea, also accompanied him on this visit.
On this day, Premier Mark McGowan said, "This was an opportunity to see the competitiveness of POSCO Group's renewable energy, including hydrogen. In particular, I was very impressed by POSCO Group's comprehensive preparation across the entire value chain, from green hydrogen production to hydrogen-based direct reduction steelmaking and hydrogen storage and utilization," sharing his impressions of the exhibition.
After the exhibition tour, Premier Mark McGowan and his delegation shared the current status and strategies of clean hydrogen, green steel (eco-friendly steel products), and critical mineral development between POSCO Group and Western Australia. They also discussed ways to cooperate in clean hydrogen, green steel, and secondary battery materials businesses.
Chairman Choi Jeong-woo stated, "Australia has been a business partner country with POSCO Group since its founding. Furthermore, close cooperation is necessary in the fields of clean hydrogen and secondary battery materials, which POSCO Group is focusing on as future growth engines." In response, Premier Mark McGowan said, "POSCO Group can be a good partner with Western Australia not only in traditional raw material cooperation but also in eco-friendly energy sectors such as clean hydrogen, green steel, and secondary battery materials."
POSCO Group has invested more than 4 trillion KRW in resource development in Australia, including iron ore, lithium, and nickel. Australia is evaluated as an optimal country for overseas clean hydrogen development due to its vast land, abundant solar and wind resources, and excellent business environment with advanced regulations and systems.
In particular, Chairman Choi Jeong-woo visited Australia in June last year and met with Premier Mark McGowan of Western Australia, as well as chairpersons of Australian resource development companies such as Hancock, First Quantum Minerals, and Pilbara Minerals. He requested cooperation and support in eco-friendly future materials fields, including steel raw materials, secondary battery materials, and hydrogen businesses. In November last year, he also attended the 43rd Korea-Australia Economic Cooperation Committee held in Sydney, Australia, as the Korean side chairman, where they discussed strategic mineral cooperation plans and various fields such as defense industry, infrastructure, and hydrogen energy.
Meanwhile, POSCO Group is holding the 'POSCO Group Hydrogen Value Chain Special Exhibition' at the POSCO Center in Seoul from the 16th of this month until the end of next month, introducing the group's hydrogen value chain. The exhibition is open to the public without reservation, and visiting hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.
Based on the 'POSCO Group Hydrogen Business' exhibition concept, which received great response from visitors at the largest domestic hydrogen industry exhibition '2022 H2 MEET' held at KINTEX in September last year, POSCO Group prepared this special exhibition to once again showcase the entire hydrogen business that the group is promoting to employees and citizens.
Notably, this time, POSCO Holdings, POSCO, POSCO International, POSCO Engineering & Construction, POSCO Mobility Solutions, and RIST are participating, presenting POSCO Group’s accumulated technological capabilities and differentiated products through a total of seven themed zones covering hydrogen production, transportation, storage, and utilization stages. Additionally, POSCO Group’s steel and solutions applied to hydrogen transportation, storage, and utilization steel, stainless steel for fuel cell metal separator plates for hydrogen vehicles, and drive motor cores are also on display.
