[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Hyundai Motor Company has applied a new in-vehicle air purification technology called 'Eco Coating' to the newly released Kona.
Eco Coating is an eco-friendly air purification technology developed by EMBIOME, a startup spun off from an in-house company, by combining biotechnology and automotive air conditioning technology.
EMBIOME analyzed over 4,000 species of microorganisms residing in vehicle air conditioners and developed a 'Microbiome' combination that does not cause unpleasant odors, is harmless, and can be used for a long time.
Eco Coating is a technology that coats the microbiome onto the vehicle air conditioner evaporator. It is expected to improve in-vehicle air quality as well as provide high safety and durability. The coated microbiome treats various gas components that can cause unpleasant odors, such as volatile organic compounds entering from outside or generated inside the vehicle, through bioremediation, keeping the interior air comfortable.
EMBIOME's microbiome technology has been verified through domestic and international related organizations and real vehicle tests, including Korea Institute of Toxicology (KIT), the Ministry of Environment, and India's eco-friendly product evaluation institute. It was applied to the Indian strategic model 'Santro' and received positive responses from consumers in the Indian market, where air pollution is severe. EMBIOME announced plans to expand the development scope by utilizing this technology for major greenhouse gas purification as well.
A Hyundai Motor official said, "We plan to expand the application of Eco Coating technology to various vehicle models in the future," adding, "We will support EMBIOME to enter various industrial fields, including the global automotive market."
