Maximizing ‘Resource Circulation Effect’ through Separate Disposal of High-Quality Recycled Material ‘Transparent PET Bottles’

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) announced that, following the end of the grace period for the ‘Transparent PET Bottle Separate Disposal System’ on December 25 last year, it will strengthen publicity to raise residents’ awareness of ‘separate disposal of transparent PET bottles’ and to ensure early establishment of the system.

In this regard, at 4 p.m. on the 30th, Mayor Lee Pil-hyung personally participated in a recycling sorting experience.

To block odors, he visited the sorting facility located deep underground at the ‘Dongdaemun Environmental Resource Center’ in front of the district office, where he worked up a sweat selecting transparent PET bottles, which have particularly high utilization among various recyclables, together with the workers.

While sorting, Mayor Lee emphasized the importance of the recycling business and listened to the voices of the workers he worked with, offering words of comfort for their hard work.

The ‘separate disposal of transparent PET bottles’ was mandated nationwide as of December 25, 2021, to prevent contamination of transparent PET bottles caused by mixed disposal and to secure high-quality recycled raw materials.

Cleanly separated transparent PET bottles can be recycled into clothing, bags, shoes, and new transparent PET bottles, making them a high-quality recycled raw material with a significant resource circulation effect.

The district plans to introduce four ‘unmanned transparent PET bottle collection machines’ within the year for efficient collection of transparent PET bottles and will continuously promote separate disposal using ‘recycling separation promotion helpers.’

After completing the sorting experience, Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, “We will continue to take an active role in environmental improvement and recycling projects to create a pleasant and clean Dongdaemun-gu,” and urged residents to actively participate in the recycling business by complying with separate disposal.

As the grace period has ended, residents are required to exercise special caution as violations of ‘separate disposal of transparent PET bottles’ may result in fines of up to 300,000 KRW.
