Frozen for 14 Consecutive Years Since 2010
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju University has frozen tuition fees for 14 consecutive years.
Gwangju University (President Kim Dongjin) announced on the 30th that it held a tuition review committee and decided to freeze undergraduate and graduate tuition fees for the 2023 academic year.
Gwangju University made this decision to minimize the financial burden of education on students and parents and considering the economic downturn caused by inflation. This marks the 14th consecutive year of tuition freeze since 2010.
Along with freezing tuition fees, Gwangju University supports students through various scholarship benefits.
In particular, for new students in 2023, the university plans to expand the number of full scholarship recipients eligible for a full tuition waiver within the 8th income bracket of the national scholarship, and provide academic encouragement scholarships of 700,000 KRW for first-time successful applicants and 400,000 KRW for supplementary successful applicants.
Additionally, through the Hosinmaewon Special Scholarship, students who achieve an average grade of level 1 in four CSAT subjects will receive a full tuition waiver for four years, full support for one overseas language training program selection, and up to 4 million KRW in academic encouragement scholarships.
Scholarship benefits are also provided to transfer students. All registrants in recruitment units except for three departments will receive scholarship benefits. Full tuition for the admission semester will be granted as a scholarship, and for the following three semesters, one-third of the tuition will be waived.
The Department of Social Welfare will waive full tuition for the admission semester and one-third of tuition for one semester, while the Department of Nursing and the Department of Early Childhood Education will reduce 500,000 KRW from the admission semester tuition.
President Kim Dongjin said, “We decided to freeze tuition fees to support students so that they can focus solely on their studies,” and added, “We will actively pursue discovering and pioneering new educational demands through government financial support projects, advancing remote education and performance management systems, and enhancing curricula for students’ success.”
