Expectations for Creating New Travel Demand During Off-Season Travel Periods

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] The Korea Tourism Organization announced on the 30th that it will pilot operate a group travel package for trips with companion dogs called 'Ulleungdo Daengdaeng Cruise.'

This package is a program where participants travel with their companion dogs on a large cruise ship (capacity of 1,200 people, 20,000-ton class) to tour Ulleungdo for 1 night and 2 days, scheduled for February 18 and 19.

On the first day, the cruise departs from Pohang Yeongilman Port and disembarks at Ulleung Sadong Passenger Terminal. Participants then board a dedicated bus to visit major Ulleungdo tourist spots such as Turtle Rock, Yerimwon, and Jodong Port Candle Rock, before returning to Pohang the next day.

Onboard the cruise, various programs are prepared including commemorative photo sessions, deck walks, and sunrise and sunset viewing. Participants receive welcome souvenirs such as commemorative badges and eco bags, along with pet snacks (freeze-dried pollack treats). Up to 150 people will be recruited on a first-come, first-served basis, and each guardian may bring one companion dog (under 15 kg according to Ulleung Cruise regulations).

Joo Sang-geon, head of the Leisure Tourism Team at the Korea Tourism Organization, said, "Last September, about 280 pet owners and 180 companion dogs participated in the Daengdaeng Cruise held at Gimpo Ara Waterway, receiving high praise. Through operating this Ulleungdo Daengdaeng Cruise package, we aim to revitalize tourism during the winter off-season and strive to develop various travel products for trips with companion animals in the future."
