Incheon Landing Operation Memorial Hall Renovated as Nighttime Attraction... Media Facade Installed Until Year-End

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Incheon City announced on the 30th that it will promote a nighttime attraction project to revive the historical and architectural significance of the Incheon Landing Operation Memorial Hall, which has been stagnant, and to provide cultural sights and entertainment.

The city plans to transform the memorial hall area into a nighttime attraction for citizens and visitors through specialized design using smart lighting and media art.

To this end, the design development was completed last November after expert consultation and review by the city’s Public Design Committee. The detailed design is expected to be completed by next month.

The city plans to replace the existing broken lighting fixtures with LEDs by as early as September and install a media facade at the entrance to operate a media art show. Additionally, a media facade will be installed on the second-floor wall by December and will begin operation from January next year.

The memorial hall opened in 1984 to commemorate the Incheon Landing Operation and the 100th anniversary of the opening of Incheon Port. It was designed by Kim Sukeun, who is regarded as a pioneer of modern Korean architecture, giving it deep architectural significance.

However, there were criticisms that the old lighting in the memorial hall was dark, making nighttime safety difficult to secure and diminishing the facility’s symbolism and architectural beauty.

The city plans to develop various historical and cultural contents in connection with Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok’s plan to commemorate the Incheon Landing Operation as a national-level event comparable to the Normandy Landing Operation in France.

An official from Incheon City said, "We will create a nighttime attraction where visitors can experience and feel the educational significance of the Incheon Landing Operation, rather than just factual explanations, similar to memorial halls and memory parks overseas. We will highlight the historical value and create a space where people want to stay, so that we can welcome citizens and tourists as soon as possible."
