[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Seoyul] The Special Committee for the Itaewon Disaster National Investigation (National Investigation Special Committee) is investigating the case in which Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min and Commissioner of the National Police Agency Yoon Hee-geun were reported for perjury.
On the 29th, the Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul announced that it is currently investigating the case recently reported by the National Investigation Special Committee. Previously, the committee reported eight people including Minister Lee Sang-min and Commissioner Yoon Hee-geun.
Minister Lee, Commissioner Yoon, and seven others were reported on charges of perjury, while former Police Agency Situation Officer 1 Lee Yong-wook was reported on charges of defamation.
The National Investigation Special Committee reported these charges against Minister Lee, Commissioner Yoon, and six others to the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office, and the case was later transferred to the police, with the Yeongdeungpo Police Station, which has jurisdiction over the National Assembly, taking charge of the investigation.
Earlier, on the 17th, the National Investigation Special Committee held a plenary meeting and adopted the national investigation result report, including the agenda of these reports. At that time, members of the People Power Party opposed the adoption of the report, disagreeing with the content that 'Minister Lee and others are responsible for the Itaewon disaster,' resulting in the report being approved solely by the three opposition parties: the Democratic Party, the Justice Party, and the Basic Income Party.
