[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] As the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine approaches, U.S. President Joe Biden is considering a visit to Europe, and Vice President Kamala Harris is also expected to attend a security conference in Germany around the same time, political media outlet Politico reported on the 28th (local time).
According to the report, Vice President Harris is considering attending the Munich Security Conference (MSC) again this year as a representative of the U.S. government, following last year. The Munich Security Conference, held from the 17th to the 19th of next month in Munich, Germany, is known as the Davos Forum of the security sector. This year’s conference will take place just before the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine (the 24th), and discussions are expected to focus on support for the Ukraine war and ways to end the conflict.
If Vice President Harris attends, it could be seen as a demonstration of the U.S.’s commitment to supporting Ukraine. The U.S. recently announced support including Patriot missiles and Abrams main battle tanks.
At last year’s conference held just before Russia invaded Ukraine, Vice President Harris warned Russia, stating, "If Russia invades Ukraine, the United States, together with its allies and partners, will impose massive and unprecedented economic costs."
Meanwhile, NBC reported on the 26th that President Biden is also considering visiting Europe next month, including Poland, a country bordering Ukraine, around the first anniversary of the Ukraine war outbreak.
The White House said in a briefing the previous day that "discussions are ongoing about how to commemorate the first anniversary," but added, "There are no related travel plans."
