Elderly Living Alone in Mapo Amid Trash Heaps Step Out Into the World

Mapo-gu, Dong Community Center, Gongdeok 119 Center, and Volunteers Unite to Prevent Welfare Blind Spots

Promise to Implement Active Welfare Administration to Eliminate Welfare Blind Spots

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] An elderly person who lived alone in a house full of garbage was brought out into the world with the help of Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su), Gongdeok 119 Safety Center, and volunteers.

The elderly person, who has a severe physical disability, had been living alone without a guardian for several years in a welfare blind spot. The elderly person's house, which had no special care, was neglected with various garbage and unnecessary items piled up without space to step.

Recently, after injuring a hip in a fall and becoming unable to move, the elderly person requested help from the Gongdeok-dong Community Center (Dongjang Shin Gwon-sik) and 119. Welfare planners and paramedics who arrived at the scene transferred the elderly person to a hospital for surgery and inpatient treatment.

Additionally, on the 20th, Mapo-gu conducted a major cleaning with Gongdeok-dong Community Center, Gongdeok 119 Safety Center, and volunteers to create a pleasant living environment for the elderly person, removing 40 bags of 75ℓ volume waste bags.

The district office assisted the elderly person in applying for basic living benefits to ensure a stable daily life after discharge. During this process, the elderly person had difficulty preparing application documents, so the Dong welfare planner personally took them in a wheelchair to the bank and actively helped with document preparation, enabling the application for basic living benefits.

The district plans to prepare various support measures, including medical expense assistance for the elderly person in the future.

Hearing about the house cleaning, the elderly person said, “I desperately wanted to clean up the accumulating garbage, but my body was weak and I became lethargic, so I couldn’t clean it at all,” and added, “Everyone actively stepped forward and helped as if it were their own business, and I don’t know how to repay this kindness.”

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “I hope the clean home will be a small gift to the elderly person,” and added, “Mapo-gu promises to carry out active welfare administration to eliminate welfare blind spots and will do its best to create a community where we live together.”
