Eco-friendly Energy-saving LED Signboards Reflect Residents' Opinions Throughout Installation Process
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Suhee) has renovated the signboards of a total of 102 businesses along approximately 500 meters of Jinhwangdo-ro (from near the GS Gildong Gas Station to the intersection at the entrance of the Veterans Hospital) with eco-friendly energy-saving LED signboards.
This project is part of the "Beautiful Signboard Street" initiative, which supports replacing old and non-standard signboards with designs that harmonize with the surrounding environment such as buildings while highlighting each business's unique character.
To promote the project, the district began accepting participation intention forms from local store owners in July last year and formed the "Signboard Improvement Promotion Residents' Committee," a voluntary consultative body of merchants. Residents' opinions were actively reflected throughout the entire process from design planning to selecting manufacturing and installation companies.
In particular, to enhance the quality of signboard designs, a professional design company was selected, focusing on improving the design and material quality. This was carried out in parallel with the "Window Advertising Maintenance Project," which improved large and vividly colored sheet advertisements on glass walls and windows into simple and sophisticated designs, further amplifying the effects of the signboard improvement project.
At the beginning of the project, there were difficulties due to opposition from store owners who believed that large and flashy signboards were better for business promotion. However, through continuous communication and persuasion, the signboard improvement project was completed. After installing charming and distinctive signboards on the elegantly transformed buildings, even those store owners who initially opposed the project expressed considerable satisfaction.
A store owner who participated in this project said, "By systematically renovating the large, old protruding signboards, the street feels much wider and more organized," and nearby residents also commented, "The dark and dull street has transformed into a bright and beautiful one, and the street seems to be gradually gaining vitality," receiving high praise from local residents.
Kim Juno, Director of Urban Landscape Division, said, "This signboard improvement project is a very meaningful project led by residents," and added, "We sincerely thank the store owners who actively participated in the project and will do our best to create a clean Gangdong and a pleasant city."
