Yangcheon-gu, Up to 15 Million Won Support Per Person for Premature Infants and Others

Medical Expense Support for Premature and Congenital Anomaly Infants in Households with Median Income Below 180% or Multiple Children (2 or More)

Since 2013, Medical Expenses of Over 1.1 Billion KRW Supported for 661 Premature and Congenital Anomaly Infants

Free Home Visit Service by Infant Specialist Nurses for Maternal and Infant Health Management Available to All Childbearing Families

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gijae) announced that it is providing up to 15 million KRW in medical expense support per infant to ease the financial burden on families with premature or congenital anomaly infants and to encourage the healthy growth and development of high-risk newborns.

The support targets premature and congenital anomaly infants in households with median income below 180%, while families with multiple children (2 or more) are eligible regardless of income level.

Medical expenses for premature infants are supported between 3 million and 10 million KRW depending on the infant’s weight, covering all out-of-pocket expenses and non-reimbursable medical fees for newborns weighing less than 2.5 kg at birth or born before 37 weeks of gestation who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit within 24 hours of birth.

Medical expenses for congenital anomaly infants are supported up to 5 million KRW for those diagnosed and hospitalized for surgery within 1 year and 4 months after birth with conditions such as esophageal atresia, intestinal atresia, anorectal malformation, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, umbilical hernia, and other Q-coded congenital anomaly diagnoses. This support covers all out-of-pocket expenses and non-reimbursable medical fees.

If an infant is both premature and has a congenital anomaly, support of up to 15 million KRW is available.

Since the program began in 2013, the district has supported over 661 infants with more than 1.1 billion KRW in medical expenses, encouraging their healthy growth.

Applications must be submitted within 6 months from the date of discharge by visiting the public health center with the infant’s resident registration address and bringing the required documents.

Additionally, the district operates the ‘Seoul Baby Health First Steps Project,’ a free home visit service by infant specialist nurses for all newborn families. Nurses visit families with children under 2 years old (1 to 4 times, up to 29 times if necessary) to provide education on maternal and infant health management, breastfeeding methods, and to foster a happy parenting environment.

Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, stated, “Overcoming the ultra-low birthrate is a national challenge, and we will do our best to develop and implement policies that cover healthy growth and development from birth, making Yangcheon-gu a city where it is good to give birth and raise children.”
