Gwangyang Steelworks Donates '1.5 Million Times Transmission Electron Microscope' to Dongshin University

Observation of Objects at the Nanoscale and Atomic Scale

Expected to Enhance Competitiveness and Foster Talent at Regional Universities

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Heo Seon-sik] POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks Quality Technology Department (Deputy Head Park Nam-sik) held a donation event on the 26th at the Gwangyang Steelworks Material Testing Laboratory to donate a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) to the research team at Dongshin University.


The event was attended by Park Nam-sik, Deputy Head of Process Quality at Gwangyang Steelworks, Lee Cheol-young, Head of Quality Technology Department at Gwangyang Steelworks, Choi Hyo-seung, Director of Industry-Academia Cooperation Promotion Group at Dongshin University, along with professors from Dongshin University and faculty members from the University Education Innovation Headquarters of the Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Innovation Platform.

The Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) is a microscope that observes objects by shooting an electron beam accelerated at high voltage onto an ultra-thin specimen prepared as an ultra-thin section. Unlike optical microscopes that can magnify about 1,000 times, TEM can magnify objects tens of thousands of times or more.


Gwangyang Steelworks, aiming to contribute to nurturing outstanding talent through industry-academia cooperation, collaborated with Jeollanam-do to find a donation recipient for the TEM. In August last year, they received a willingness to accept from Dongshin University and decided to donate the equipment.


The TEM equipment donated by Gwangyang Steelworks to Dongshin University can magnify objects up to 1.5 million times, enabling observation at the nanoscale and atomic scale.


Additionally, it has the advantage of being able to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the fine structure, defects, and chemical composition of specimens, and it is expected to be utilized in research on the crystal structure of raw materials for secondary battery materials by Dongshin University professors.


In particular, this industry-academia cooperation through the donation of the TEM by Gwangyang Steelworks is expected to contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of regional universities and create synergy effects with local startup companies.


Park Nam-sik, Deputy Head of Process Quality at Gwangyang Steelworks, said, “I hope the TEM donated to Dongshin University will greatly help the development of researchers and students,” and added, “Gwangyang Steelworks will continue to create various opportunities for industry-academia cooperation and actively practice the corporate citizenship management philosophy to become a company that works together with the local community.”
