Deepening and Developing Friendly Cooperation Between the Two Countries... Recognized for Contributions
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Busan City announced that Shin Jae-hyun, the city's International Relations Ambassador, will receive the Honorary Grand Decoration (Silver Medal) from the Austrian Federal Government in recognition of his contributions to the Republic of Austria.
The award ceremony will be held at 11:30 AM on the 27th at the Embassy of Austria in Korea, where Dr. Wolfgang Angerholzer, Ambassador of Austria to Korea, will present the Honorary Grand Decoration to Ambassador Shin Jae-hyun.
Before his appointment as Busan City's International Relations Ambassador on July 5 last year, Shin Jae-hyun served as Ambassador to the Republic of Korea at the Embassy of Austria and as Ambassador to the Permanent Mission to International Organizations in Vienna.
This award is given by Alexander Van der Bellen, President of the Austrian Federal Republic, in recognition of Ambassador Shin’s contributions during his tenure as Ambassador to Austria from May 2019 to July 2022, including elevating the existing friendly cooperative relationship between Austria and Korea to a ‘strategic partnership.’
Austria is internationally competitive not only in traditional industries such as steel and machinery but also in various fields including innovation, digital technology, and renewable energy. It is also a cultural and artistic powerhouse represented by figures like Mozart, Schubert, and Klimt.
The capital city Vienna is one of the world’s top three centers for multilateral diplomacy, hosting major international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations.
During his tenure as Ambassador to Austria, Shin Jae-hyun also served as Chair of the IAEA Board of Governors in 2021 and 2022.
Vienna, the capital of Austria, is one of the world’s three major cities hosting international organizations alongside New York and Geneva. It is home to numerous international organizations including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the Ban Ki-Moon Center for Global Citizens, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
A Busan City official stated that Ambassador Shin Jae-hyun’s extensive overseas network and diplomatic skills have been recognized by Austria through the awarding of the Honorary Grand Decoration, which will greatly support promotional and negotiation activities for the 2030 Busan World Expo bid, especially focusing on Austria and the 48 member countries of the International Bureau of Expositions (BIE) across Europe.
Since his appointment as Busan City’s International Relations Ambassador on July 5 last year, Ambassador Shin has been actively supporting the negotiation and promotional activities for the 2030 Busan World Expo bid.
In this regard, he has supported major overseas high-level invitation events such as the Korea-Latin America Future Cooperation Forum (July), Korea-Central Asia Cooperation Forum (October), Korea-Central America Special Roundtable (November), and Korea-Caribbean High-Level Forum (December).
He also actively participated in bid negotiations with three Central Asian countries (August), submission of the 2030 World Expo bid plan (September), bid negotiations with five countries in the US and Latin America (October), promotional activities linked to the National Day event at the Embassy of Korea in France (October), attendance at the 171st General Assembly of the International Bureau of Expositions (BIE) and bid negotiations with three European countries (December), and promotional activities during the Davos Forum (January 2023).
