On the 26th (local time), An Byeong-hun shot an even par on the second day of the Farmers Insurance Open (total prize money $8.7 million), part of the 2022/2023 PGA Tour season, held at Torrey Pines South Course (par 72, 7,765 yards) in San Diego, California, USA, rising to a tie for 14th place (4-under 140). This tournament is played with the first and second rounds split between the Torrey Pines South Course and North Course (par 72, 7,258 yards), with the third and fourth rounds played on the South Course.
Starting from a tie for 19th place, 4 strokes behind, An Byeong-hun exchanged 5 birdies and 5 bogeys. He struggled with 3 birdies and 5 bogeys over 12 holes, posting 2-over par, but managed to record an even par by making birdies on the 6th and final 9th holes (both par 5s). He relied on powerful drives up to 343 yards and ‘stingy putting’ with an average of 1.556 putts per hole. This marks his second chance at a ‘top 10’ finish this season since tying for 4th at the Fortinet Championship last September.
Sam Ryder (USA) shot 4-under par on the South Course to maintain his lead on the leaderboard for the second consecutive day at 12-under par 132. He is ranked 283rd in the world and has yet to win a tournament. Brendan Steele (USA) is chasing in second place, 3 strokes behind at 9-under par 135. Jon Rahm (Spain), ranked 3rd in the world and with two wins this year, improved by 5 strokes to jump from a tie for 116th place the previous day to a tie for 14th.
Justin Thomas and defending champion Luke List are tied for 24th place (2-under par 142), while Xander Schauffele (all USA) is tied for 36th place (1-under par 143). Last year’s runner-up Will Zalatoris (USA) struggled with 5-over par and missed the cut, tied for 74th place (1-over par 145).
Among Koreans, rookie Kim Seong-hyun, who was tied for 12th place, 3 strokes behind the leader the previous day, fell back to a tie for 20th place (3-under par 141) after shooting 3-over par. Sony Open winner Kim Si-woo lost one stroke with 2 birdies and 3 bogeys, tied for 24th place along with newlywed Im Sung-jae.
