Attended Classes for 4 Days... Arrested by Police
A 29-year-old Korean woman who forged documents to lie about her age and enroll in an American high school was caught by local police.
On the 26th (local time), according to ABC and others, New Jersey police announced that they had charged Shin Mo (29), a Korean woman who forged a birth certificate and other documents to enroll in New Brunswick High School in the area, with forgery of official documents.
Shin lied about her age, claiming to be 15 years old, and attended classes pretending to be a high school student for four days. She submitted a fake birth certificate to the Board of Education to falsify her age and register for high school. During the four days she attended school, she mostly stayed with the guidance counselor but was also found to have participated in some classes.
The motive behind Shin’s crime has not been clearly revealed, but students and parents are feeling uneasy. One student said, "It seems the older woman came to school to involve students in (the crime). That fact makes us anxious."
Another student said, "Everyone got scared knowing that someone lied about their age to enroll," adding, "Some friends even gave personal information to the woman."
Parents criticized the school's inadequate security system and urged for countermeasures. One parent emphasized, "It’s even scarier that the reason for enrolling by lying about age has not been revealed," and added, "Such incidents must not be repeated in the future."
Shin’s crime was uncovered during the school’s process of requesting submission of enrollment-related documents. In New Jersey, students enrolling in schools in the area are required to submit documents such as birth certificates within 30 days.
