[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] Gangwon Province is taking the first step to fulfill Governor Kim Jin-tae's pledge to "train 10,000 semiconductor personnel" and "establish the Wonju Semiconductor Cluster."

On the afternoon of the 27th, the province will hold the "Semiconductor Education Center Launch Ceremony and Semiconductor Shared University Agreement Ceremony" at the International Conference Room of the 60th Anniversary Hall of Gangwon National University.

The province announced plans to "establish the first semiconductor education center among metropolitan local governments and build infrastructure for training semiconductor specialists through the Gangwon-type Semiconductor Shared University," as part of the semiconductor cluster development plan.

This marks the launch of the semiconductor education center, the first project under the goal of "Made 人 Gangwon, training 10,000 semiconductor talents," and signifies the collaboration of seven universities and specialized high schools in Gangwon Province to create the semiconductor cluster.

At the semiconductor education center launch ceremony, Governor Kim Jin-tae will present the semiconductor education center plaque to Sung Jo-hwan, Acting Director of Gangwon Technopark, to announce the launch.

The total budget for the semiconductor education center project is 46 billion KRW, of which 20 billion KRW has been secured as national funding. The center will be built in the Wonju area by 2026, and until its completion, it will be temporarily operated at the Wonju Venture Factory of Gangwon Technopark.

The semiconductor shared university agreement will be signed by the presidents of seven universities and heads of three institutions. Starting this year, the shared university will be operated with 5 billion KRW support over four years to produce specialized personnel.

At the Gangwon Province Semiconductor Future Talent Talk Concert, led by students from participating universities, Governor Kim Jin-tae and Gangwon National University President Kim Heon-young will provide explanations and answers regarding the semiconductor industry and education.

The province plans to incorporate various opinions from the talk concert into future policies for training semiconductor specialists.

About 150 people, including members of the National Assembly, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Wonju City, Gangwon Provincial Office of Education, seven local universities, Gangwon Technopark, three specialized high schools, and semiconductor-related major students, will attend the event.

Governor Kim Jin-tae said, "By operating the semiconductor education center and shared university, we will build infrastructure for semiconductor specialists within the province," adding, "We will succeed in attracting semiconductor specialized universities and regional semiconductor joint research institutes to train 10,000 talents who will lead the global semiconductor industry, and based on this, we will attract semiconductor companies."
