Goheung-gun Operates Friendship Program for Elderly Living Alone with Dementia

Providing Emotional Care, Supporting Health Management for Dementia Elderly

[Goheung=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Shim Jeong-woo] Jeonnam Goheung-gun (Governor Gong Young-min) announced on the 26th that from the 18th to the 25th, they conducted a 1:7 Friend (Partner) Matching activity targeting 80 elderly dementia patients living alone.

This project targets elderly living alone and those not using long-term care services registered at the Goheung-gun Dementia Safety Center. It matches dementia safety center staff with elderly dementia patients living alone at a ratio of 1 to 7, providing emotional care like friends and helping manage the health of dementia patients.

The main activities include ▲checking on the well-being of elderly dementia patients living alone ▲monitoring health status ▲maintaining household cleanliness ▲organizing the environment to prevent accidents ▲checking the safety of heating appliances ▲providing regular medication guidance, and other daily life support services, conducted through monthly visits or well-being phone calls.

The Goheung-gun Dementia Safety Center began matching staff and elderly dementia patients living alone at a 1:3 ratio in 2021. Due to high responsiveness from dementia patients, since last year, the Friend (Partner) Matching has been expanded to a 1:7 ratio, steadily managing the health of elderly dementia patients living alone.

In addition, various projects are underway to alleviate the economic burden on dementia patients and their families, including ▲support for dementia examination fees ▲support for dementia treatment management fees ▲provision of care supplies ▲operation of shelter programs.

A county official stated, “We will do our best to minimize gaps in dementia care within the region and establish a dementia care system without blind spots to build a community safety net.”
