Not Included Among the Five Final Nominees for International Feature Film
Director Park Chan-wook's film Decision to Leave failed to advance to the American Academy Awards. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced the final list of nominees for the 95th Academy Awards during an online live broadcast on the 24th (local time). Although Decision to Leave was among the fifteen shortlisted films in the International Feature Film category, it was not included in the final five nominees. It lost out to Edward Berger's All Quiet on the Western Front (Germany), Santiago Mitre's Argentina, 1985 (Argentina), Lukas Dhont's Close (Belgium, Netherlands, France), Jerzy Skolimowski's EO (Poland, Italy), and Colm Bair?ad's The Quiet Girl (Ireland).
Decision to Leave was anticipated to recreate the glory of Parasite, which swept the Cannes Film Festival (Palme d'Or) and the Academy Awards (Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, Best International Feature Film, Best Picture). It won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival and garnered numerous trophies at major domestic film festivals. However, dark clouds gathered as it suffered consecutive setbacks at the Golden Globe Awards and Critics' Choice Awards, which are considered precursors to the Academy Awards.
Meanwhile, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert's Everything Everywhere All at Once led the nominations with eleven categories, including Best Picture and Best Director. All Quiet on the Western Front and Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin followed with nine nominations each, Baz Luhrmann's Elvis received eight, Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans had seven, and Todd Field's T?r and Joseph Kosinski's Top Gun: Maverick each earned six nominations.
