Women-Friendly City Dongdaemun-gu, Creating a Safe Neighborhood Environment Together with Civil, Public, and Police
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] ‘Women-Friendly City Dongdaemun-gu’ (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) has carried out an alleyway environment improvement project to prevent crime.
To secure blind spot visibility and improve lighting conditions to prevent crime, a sculpture reflecting the alleyway in a convex mirror was installed.
On a late night when darkness falls, entering an alley in Dongdaemun-gu, the Dongdaemun-gu emblem engraved with the 8th-term vision ‘Dongdaemun-gu Opening Happiness’ shines, wrapping around the convex mirror, and below the mirror, the address of the area sparkles. The alley address display is designed so that reporters in emergency situations can easily recognize their current location, which is expected to contribute to lowering the crime rate by enabling police forces to respond more quickly to crisis situations.
The alley improvement project was carried out in two stages: first, with the help of the Crime Prevention Diagnosis Team (CPO) of the Dongdaemun Police Station’s Community Safety Division, the installation locations were selected; second, residents’ opinions were reflected through campaigns in areas densely populated by single female households such as university districts and subway station surroundings.
Currently, throughout the 14 neighborhoods of Dongdaemun-gu, including 12 ‘Shining Dongdaemun Convex Mirrors,’ solar-powered marker lights embedded in the ground are protecting residents’ safety in dark and secluded alleyways.
After the installation of the sculptures, local residents responded positively, saying, “I feel protected,” and “I feel safe even when passing through alleyways late at night.”
Meanwhile, the crime prevention environment creation project was conducted with citizen participation budget, and it is significant that the enhancement of community safety was achieved through cooperation among civil, public, and police sectors. Throughout 2022, Dongdaemun-gu has promoted the ‘Safe Neighborhood with CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design)’ project in cooperation with Dongdaemun Police Station to prevent various crimes.
Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, promised, “In 2023, we plan to continue the crime prevention environment creation project and will keep striving to lower the crime rate in cooperation with Dongdaemun Police Station,” pledging to work hard for a safe Dongdaemun-gu.
