[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] The Hollywood blockbuster "Avatar: The Way of Water" (Avatar 2) surpassed 10 million viewers on the 24th.
According to the integrated computer network for movie ticket sales, "Avatar 2," which was released on the 14th of last month, exceeded a cumulative audience of 10 million on this day. It took 42 days since its release. "Avatar 2" became the first foreign film to attract 10 million viewers since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. During the same period, it became the second domestic release to reach 10 million viewers, following "Crime City 2."
However, its box office speed is somewhat slower compared to its predecessor "Avatar" (2009), which was the first foreign film to surpass 10 million viewers. "Avatar" exceeded 10 million viewers in 38 days after its release.
Directed by James Cameron, "Avatar 2" depicts the journey and battles of Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington), who transformed from a human to a Na'vi, and Neytiri (played by Zoe Saldana), as their family fights for survival. One of the film's major attractions is its overwhelming visual beauty created with cutting-edge imaging technology.
Additionally, the mysterious creatures roaming the underwater world and the battle scenes rendered with top-tier computer graphics (CG) were enough to captivate fans visiting theaters.
Having surpassed 10 million viewers, "Avatar 2" ranks 27th in the all-time box office rankings for domestic releases, following "Frozen" (2014). Among foreign films alone, it ranks 9th.
The predecessor "Avatar" gathered a total of 11.33 million viewers, placing it 8th overall. This film has maintained its position as the highest-grossing global box office record to date.
"Avatar 2" has generated 126.3 billion KRW in revenue domestically since its release.
Globally, it has recorded a box office exceeding 2 billion USD (approximately 2.47 trillion KRW), surpassing "Spider-Man: No Way Home" to become the 6th highest-grossing film of all time.
If "Avatar 2" continues to generate additional revenue and surpasses "Avengers: Infinity War" (2.05 billion USD), which ranks 5th, it will mark a remarkable achievement with three of James Cameron's works?"Avatar," "Titanic," and "Avatar 2"?all included in the top 5 global box office records.
