[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Pohang City has been continuously receiving awards in various prestigious evaluations in the field of green cities. Pohang City Transforms Urban Color with 'Greenway', Evolving into a Citizen-Centered Green City Mayor Lee Gang-deok encouraged the Greenway Promotion Division employees who worked hard to win the Asia Cityscape Award on the 20th at the City Hall External Cooperation Office.

On that day, Mayor Lee asked the employees of the Greenway Promotion Division, who received the Asian Townscape Award, to “transform the Greenway Project from a city structure centered on speed and efficiency formed during the industrialization era into a future-oriented green city where people-centered leisure and comfort are respected,” and urged them to “make further efforts to create a happy residential environment for citizens.”

The Asian Townscape Awards are jointly hosted by UN-Habitat and four other organizations, aiming to “build a happy living environment for Asians.” It is an internationally prestigious award given to cities, regions, and projects that serve as models and have achieved results. Pohang City attended the domestic award ceremony for the ‘2022 Asian Townscape Awards’ on the 13th and received the grand prize.

Cheolgilsup is a representative project of the Greenway Project promoted by Pohang City, stretching a total of 9.3 km from Yuseong Girls’ High School in Buk-gu to Yugang Water Purification Plant in Yeonil-eup, Nam-gu, passing through seven administrative districts.

Approximately 210,000 people, about 43% of Pohang’s population, live within a 15-minute walking distance, making accessibility and utilization high. The nearby deteriorated residential areas have transformed into cafes and restaurants, leading to spontaneous urban regeneration.

In particular, a pedestrian and bicycle culture has been established, and it is used as a citizen rest area where people enjoy leisure and walks, becoming a green landmark of Pohang. Public art works from the Steel Art Festival have been installed in Pohang Cheolgilsup, and citizen-participatory cultural and artistic activities are creating a new urban landscape.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang said, “The Greenway Project promoted by Pohang City is recognized domestically and internationally for its achievements and is producing excellent results.” He added, “Through this award, we will build networks with cities that have excellent landscape cases at home and abroad and discuss various development plans to create a happy living environment for citizens in the future.”
