Gwangjin-gu, Free Pneumococcal Vaccination for Seniors Aged 65 and Over

One-time vaccination for those born before December 31, 1958

Prevents 50-80% of severe complications such as bacteremia and meningitis

Vaccinations available at 119 designated medical institutions in the area

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) is conducting a free pneumococcal (PPSV23) vaccination program for seniors aged 65 and older.

Pneumococcus is one of the main causative bacteria of invasive infections such as acute otitis media, pneumonia, bacteremia, and meningitis. Pneumococcal infections occur more frequently in elderly people aged 65 and above with weakened immunity.

Bacteremia has a mortality rate of 60%, and meningitis has a mortality rate of 80%, making them very life-threatening. However, a single lifetime vaccination for those aged 65 and older can prevent 50-80% of these severe complications.

Therefore, if the pneumococcal (PPSV23) vaccine has been administered to those aged 65 and older, no additional vaccination is necessary. However, if vaccinated before the age of 65, an additional dose can be given once 5 years have passed since the initial vaccination and the individual has reached 65 years of age.

This year, those aged 65 and older are those born on or before December 31, 1958. Seniors who have reached the eligible age but have never been vaccinated can receive the vaccine for free by bringing their ID and visiting designated medical institutions in the area.

The designated medical institutions can be found on the ‘Vaccination Helper’ website and the Gwangjin-gu Office Health Center homepage. It is advised to inquire about vaccine availability before visiting the medical institution.
