Four Vulnerable Snow Removal Areas Including Steep Slopes Around Bongjesan in Hwagok-dong and Village Bus Routes
Introduction of Smart Remote Snow Melting System to Minimize Ice Road Accidents and Resident Damage
Kim Tae-woo, Mayor of Gangseo-gu: “Proactive Response to Heavy Snow through Expansion of Road Heating Installation”
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seoul Gangseo-gu (Mayor Kim Tae-woo) is accelerating efforts to create a safe environment city by additionally installing road heating systems in snow removal vulnerable areas such as steep slopes where vehicle operation is difficult during winter heavy snowfall.
Recently, heavy snowfall of up to 60cm occurred mainly in the mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, and the coldest wave during the Lunar New Year holiday is expected, continuing the severe winter weather, which requires preparation for ice road safety accidents.
In particular, Hwagok-dong in Gangseo-gu is a village area formed around Bongjesan and Ujangsan, making it vulnerable to snow in winter.
Accordingly, the district installed road heating systems at four locations in November last year to proactively respond to heavy snowfall, and plans to build an additional four locations this year.
The road heating system is a smart remote snow melting system that installs electric heating wires 7cm below the asphalt road surface and generates heat during heavy snowfall to melt the snow.
Compared to snow removal agents that pose risks of corrosion to road facilities and environmental pollution, it is eco-friendly and effectively melts snow, greatly contributing to preventing safety accidents caused by black ice, the “road assassin.”
Last year, the district installed road heating at four locations including Geumnanghwa-ro (around Banghwa Gaehwa APT), and this year plans to additionally install road heating at four locations using 1.3 billion KRW of city funds: 86 Hwagok-ro 58-gil (around Deungseo Elementary School), 121 Chorokmaeul-ro (around Taechang Nesthill APT), 135 Gomdallae-ro 35-gil (around Bongjesan), and 163 Gomdallae-ro 35-gil (around Bongjesan).
The additional installation sections include steep slopes around Bongjesan in Hwagok-dong and village bus routes frequently used by residents.
The road heating system enables immediate initial response to snowfall and icing, alleviating resident inconvenience caused by traffic congestion and preventing winter safety accidents.
Mayor Kim Tae-woo said, “To prevent winter safety accidents, we will conduct a full survey of snow removal vulnerable areas such as steep slopes and habitual icing sections in the region and continue to expand the installation of road heating systems. We will do our best to create a safe environment city Gangseo-gu where residents can live comfortably.”
