The Ministry of National Defense announced that Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seop conducted an on-site inspection on the morning of the 21st at the Marine Corps Yeonpyeong Unit and the Navy's Electronic Surveillance Post located on Yeonpyeong Island ahead of the Lunar New Year.
After receiving an operational status report from the commander of the Yeonpyeong Unit, Minister Lee stated, "Thirteen years ago, during North Korea's surprise artillery attack, not a single Marine retreated or hesitated; they fought bravely and won," emphasizing, "We must never forget the lesson learned from the Yeonpyeong Island shelling battle that 'only strong power can protect peace.'"
He ordered a firm and strong retaliation against provocations from the North. Minister Lee encouraged, "As seen in the small unmanned aerial vehicle provocations, North Korea can launch sudden attacks at any time. Inheriting the indomitable Marine spirit of the heroes from the Yeonpyeong Island shelling battle, do not hesitate to respond decisively and powerfully to direct provocations from North Korea."
He added, "To achieve this, we must transform the military's structure to focus on building a force that always wins when it fights," urging, "Operate units primarily for combat missions in peacetime, and especially cultivate a culture that values practical and rigorous training as the highest priority to maximize the spirit and combat power of 'victory before battle' and establish a command system to create combat-ready units."
Continuing his visit to the Navy's Electronic Surveillance Post, he encouraged, "The reason our citizens can spend the Lunar New Year holiday comfortably is thanks to all of you who serve devotedly for the nation and the people despite the isolated environment of the island and limited conditions."
He concluded, "The Ministry of National Defense will improve working conditions so that you can serve in the military with pride and fulfillment, and will foster a social atmosphere where your dedication receives proper recognition."
