Jeonnam is the only metropolitan city/province in the country without a medical school, lacking a system for training and supplying medical personnel.
Especially, due to the rapid decrease of public health doctors, the promotional leaflets emphasized the urgent need to establish a national medical school in Jeonnam to address medical service gaps in medically vulnerable areas such as island regions and rural fishing villages.
Cha Joo-hwan, Director of Planning at Mokpo National University, said, “Jeollanam-do is a region where 58% of the country's inhabited islands are concentrated, and it is a medically vulnerable area with the highest nationwide levels of elderly population aged 65 and over, the proportion of patients with seven major chronic diseases, and emergency patient rates. To solve these issues, it is essential to establish a national medical school in Jeonnam.” He added, “We ask for the interest and active cooperation of local residents for the establishment of a national medical school in Jeollanam-do.”
Meanwhile, Mokpo National University is actively engaged in various activities to promote the necessity of establishing a national medical school in Jeonnam, including participation in various forums, hosting joint forums for the establishment of national university medical schools by region, signature campaigns, and large-scale rallies at the National Assembly.
