Pre-Driving Checklist

First, check the washer fluid and wiper blades. Make sure there is enough washer fluid, and if it is low, refill it with winter washer fluid that has a low freezing point. If the wipers make noise when operating or fail to clean the windshield properly, it is time to replace them with new ones.

Since the air contracts due to the lowered temperature, tire air pressure also decreases, so tires should be checked as well. Recently released vehicles have a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that allows you to check the air pressure on the dashboard. In winter, it is recommended to switch to winter tires that provide sufficient grip even in cold weather.

During Driving Checklist

If you drive early in the morning or pass through snowy roads, drive slowly to prepare for icy sections and maintain a safety distance at least twice as much as usual. Special caution is required because you may encounter invisible black ice. On snowy roads, following the tire tracks of the car ahead can reduce the chance of slipping. If your car wheels spin in the snow, temporarily turning off the TCS (Traction Control System) or ESC (Electronic Stability Control) can help you get out.

If you encounter heavy snowfall while driving, turn on the radio to immediately check weather conditions. To prevent accidents, turn on the fog lights and install snow chains. When snow chains are installed, do not exceed a speed of 40 km/h. Driving at high speeds may damage the snow chains and cause damage to the vehicle. To prevent vehicle damage and maintain ride comfort, remove the snow chains immediately after use.

Post-Driving Checklist

After safely finishing your drive, it is advisable to wash your vehicle immediately using a high-pressure washer because calcium chloride spread on the roads can cause corrosion on the underside of the vehicle. After washing, wipe off any remaining water on the painted surfaces immediately to prevent freezing. Then, carefully check that there is no foreign substance on the sensors at the front and rear of the vehicle to avoid any issues during the next drive.

If you usually park your vehicle outdoors, it is good to cover it with a car cover that prevents frost from forming on the windshield and prevents the parking brake from freezing, providing insulation effects.

Hwang Gyuseok, head of K Car’s inspection department, explained, “Long-distance winter driving can reduce the residual value of the car due to corrosion caused by calcium chloride or body damage caused by improper use of snow chains. Taking proper measures before and after long-distance driving can protect both the driver’s safety and the vehicle’s value.”
