[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province will increase the Veterans Honor Allowance paid to national veterans and their bereaved families (eligible recipients) by 30,000 KRW per month starting this year.
On the 20th, Suwon City announced that it had partially amended the "Suwon City Ordinance on the Treatment and Support of National Veterans" last December to provide a basis for raising the Veterans Honor Allowance.
Accordingly, from January this year, the allowance for war veterans (Korean War, Vietnam War) was raised from 70,000 KRW to 100,000 KRW per month, and for other national veterans, it was increased from 50,000 KRW to 80,000 KRW per month.
The recipients of the Veterans Honor Allowance are national veterans and their bereaved families (eligible recipients) aged 65 or older who have their address registered in Suwon City as of the 1st of each month. The city estimates the number of recipients to be around 7,600.
The Veterans Honor Allowance is deposited into recipients' accounts on the 25th of each month. Those who have not yet applied for the allowance can apply at their local administrative welfare center. The allowance is paid from the application date.
A city official emphasized, "Suwon City is one of the local governments in Gyeonggi Province with a large population of national veterans and their bereaved families," adding, "We will do our best to support national veterans who have devoted themselves to the country."
Earlier, Seongnam City amended the "Seongnam City Ordinance on the Treatment and Support of Independence Patriots and National Veterans" last December and decided to provide a monthly allowance of 100,000 KRW to the bereaved families of war veterans starting January this year.
The recipients are spouses of deceased war veterans who are aged 65 or older and have their address registered in Seongnam City as of the 1st of each month. The city expects to pay welfare allowances to 600 people and has secured a related budget of 720 million KRW.
