Gyeongnam Social Survey Results, Gyeongnam Ranks 1st in Welfare Satisfaction
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Wook] In Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, the saying has changed to "The whole village comes out to protect one vulnerable person."
These days, ahead of the Lunar New Year, some people donate homemade side dishes, while others collect laundry and volunteer to wash clothes. Companies generously sponsor food ingredients. There are also many anonymous cash donors. All of this heartwarming story is happening at Uiryeong-gun’s ‘Sarang Nanum Refrigerator’ and ‘Gongyu Washing Machine’.

On the 18th, County Governor Oh Tae-wan visited Uiryeong Traditional Market to shop for Lunar New Year supplies and donated the purchased ritual items to the ‘Sarang Nanum Refrigerator’ at the Uiryeong-eup Administrative Welfare Center. The refrigerator was filled with various ingredients such as pork, fruits, and vegetables.
The Sarang Nanum Refrigerator, a unique project of Uiryeong-gun, is a program where the county provides food to low-income families through sponsorships from companies and individuals. On this day, several regular sponsors joined Governor Oh’s ‘surprise donation’ event. Dodam Agricultural Products (mushrooms), Uiryeong Bean Sprouts, Egg Farms, and the Pig Farming Association have continuously donated food ingredients to the Uiryeong-eup Sarang Nanum Refrigerator since 2019. Governor Oh expressed amazement at their long-standing good deeds and instructed to prepare measures to support the sponsors.
Next, Governor Oh continued his volunteer work at the laundromat. The four shared washing machines in Uiryeong-eup’s laundromat provide a welfare service that collects laundry, washes, and delivers it to low-income households who have difficulty washing large items or drying clothes at home. The Uiryeong-eup Community Security Council volunteers twice a week.
Governor Oh personally washed, dried, and delivered the laundry. He visited two households to inspect the system for discovering vulnerable families in welfare blind spots and to listen to the voices of the vulnerable.
Governor Oh told the responsible officials, “I want to give high marks for proactive discovery of vulnerable families through visiting welfare,” and urged, “Please carefully manage to provide integrated welfare services and link with local resources to offer practical help.”
Governor Oh said, “I want to implement a dense and warm welfare policy without neglecting even a single neighbor in need or any citizen,” and “I deeply respect our citizens who are creating a happy local community together.”
Uiryeong-gun ranked first in satisfaction surveys across six welfare fields in the ‘2022 Gyeongsangnam-do Social Survey’ announced last December.
