This Year, 3.4 Billion Won Budget Allocated... Operating a Total of 152 Locations, Expanding Installation of Senior Protection Zones
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Chang-won] The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Autonomous Police Unit (Chief Go Chang-kyung) announced on the 19th that, ahead of the new school term, it is expanding unmanned traffic enforcement equipment in key roads including children's protection zones across the province to ensure children's traffic safety, currently operating a total of 152 locations.
The Jeju Autonomous Police Unit was the first among local governments nationwide to complete the installation of unmanned traffic enforcement equipment at 69 children's protection zones starting from May last year and has been operating them independently.
The newly added unmanned traffic enforcement equipment includes 72 locations installed by the Autonomous Police Unit in accordance with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's 'Children's Protection Zone Traffic Safety Enhancement Measures,' and for the first time, 11 facilities installed by related provincial departments (Road Management Office, Traffic Administration Division) as part of the 'Traffic Accident Frequent Area Intersection Improvement Project' have been transferred and put into operation.
According to traffic accident statistics in the province, the number of traffic accidents in children's protection zones last year decreased by 38% to a total of 5 cases compared to 8 cases in 2021.
The significant installation of unmanned traffic enforcement equipment is seen as greatly contributing to the prevention of children's traffic accidents, and this year, approximately 3.4 billion KRW, including national and local funds, will be invested in the unmanned traffic enforcement equipment installation project.
Hyung Cheong-do, Director of the Jeju Autonomous Police Unit Traffic Information Center, said, "Through continuous inspection and facility improvements of traffic safety facilities in zones protecting children, the elderly, and the disabled, we will actively support the securing of safe walkways for vulnerable road users and the people-centered traffic policy of the 8th local government administration."
