Supporting Expo Bid... Incumbent President's Third Time

[Davos=Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] President Yoon Suk-yeol on the 18th (local time) directly took part in the '2030 Busan Expo bid,' stating, "Korea intends to seize the opportunity to host the Expo and fulfill its responsibilities and roles." He also expressed confidence that unlike 70 years ago, when Korea faced hardships such as war, division, and poverty, it has now risen as an economic and cultural powerhouse recognized worldwide.


That evening, President Yoon attended the Korea Night event held in Davos, Switzerland, saying, "We are currently facing complex challenges such as the global economic crisis, climate crisis, and polarization, which are difficult to solve by the efforts of any single country alone," and emphasized, "Korea intends to actively participate in international efforts to solve common human problems together with private companies."

Korea Night is an event aimed at promoting Korea and sharing networks with key global political and business figures attending the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting (WEF, Davos Forum). This is the third time a sitting president has attended this event, following former Presidents Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye.


President Yoon lightened the mood by saying, "When I entered this hall, I couldn't see any drinks or food and worried, 'How can we host guests like this?' but I'm really relieved to hear everything is prepared."


In line with the Busan Expo bid, events to showcase the taste and charm of Korea continued. Performances by female vocalists Na Yoon-sun and Sohyang, followed by a dance group Ambiguous, were held, along with a variety of traditional Korean dishes such as Tteokgalbi, Gujeolpan, and Galbijjim.


President Yoon reiterated his support for the Busan Expo, saying, "Korea is an economic powerhouse where global companies and startups coexist with dynamism and openness, and a cutting-edge industrial powerhouse leading innovative technologies such as semiconductors, batteries, future cars, and clean energy," adding, "It is also a creative cultural powerhouse inspiring people worldwide through K-pop, movies, dramas, and webtoons."


The event was attended by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i?, Klaus Schwab, Chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Chuck Robbins, Chairman of Cisco Systems, Arthur G. Sulzberger, Chairman of The New York Times (NYT), Anthony Tan, CEO of Grab, among others. Domestic business leaders included Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong, SK Group Chairman and Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Chey Tae-won, Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Eui-sun, LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo, Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin, GS Group Chairman Huh Tae-soo, CJ Group Chairman Sohn Kyung-shik, and Hyosung Group Vice Chairman Cho Hyun-sang.
