Since 2009, Gwangyang Steelworks has held the 'Rice of Hope' delivery ceremony annually to alleviate difficulties faced by local farmers and proactively address the issue of food insecurity among vulnerable groups, practicing warm sharing so that underprivileged neighbors can have a happy and abundant holiday.
Through the 'Rice of Hope' delivery ceremony, Gwangyang Steelworks has so far delivered a total of 35,288 bags of rice (20kg each), worth approximately 1.6 billion KRW, to social welfare institutions in Gwangyang City and neighbors in need such as elderly living alone, disabled persons, and multicultural families, helping to ensure they are not marginalized.
This Lunar New Year, they plan to deliver 2,069 bags of 20kg white rice, worth 80 million KRW, to about 97 social welfare facilities and related organizations that require meal services.
In particular, by purchasing rice produced by local farmers in the Gwangyang area, it is expected to have a 'two birds with one stone' effect, helping both underprivileged neighbors and revitalizing the local economy.
On this day, Jeong In-hwa, Mayor of Gwangyang City, said, “We thank Gwangyang Steelworks for their generous interest and support for the vulnerable groups in our city,” adding, “These small efforts combined will create a harmonious Gwangyang City where all stakeholders in the local community coexist.”
Lee Cheol-ho, Deputy Director of Gwangyang Steelworks, stated, “The Rice of Hope delivery project by Gwangyang Steelworks is even more meaningful as it supports local farmers and becomes a small hope for neighbors in need,” and added, “We will continue to fulfill our role as a corporate citizen through social contribution projects together with the local community.”
