[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] It has been confirmed that three candidates, including former Prosecutor General Jeong Soon-shin, former head of the Yongin branch of the Judicial Research and Training Institute, have applied for the competitive recruitment exam for the position of Chief of the National Investigation Headquarters, who oversees police investigations.
According to the police and legal circles on the 18th, the applicants for the Chief of the National Investigation Headquarters, whose application deadline was on the 16th, are former Director Jeong, Jang Kyung-seok (59), former Deputy Commissioner of the Incheon Police Agency, and Choi In-seok (48), former Chief of the Hwacheon Police Station in Gangwon Province.
Former Director Jeong passed the 37th Judicial Examination in 1995 and worked as a lawyer at the law firm Chungjeong in 1998 before transferring to the prosecutor's office in 2001. In 2011, when President Yoon Seok-yeol was the head of the second division of the Central Investigation Department at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, Jeong served as the deputy spokesperson of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office. In 2018, he worked at the same prosecution office as the Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office and as a human rights supervisor. He retired from the prosecution in 2020 after serving as the head of the Judicial Research and Training Institute and took on the role of lead attorney at the law firm Pyeongsan.
Jang, a graduate of the 2nd class of the Korean National Police University, served as the head of the Public Order Division at the National Police Agency, Chief of the Gangseo Police Station in Seoul, and head of the investigation department at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. He retired after serving as the Deputy Commissioner of the Incheon Police Agency and has been working as a specialist for the police investigation response team at the law firm Taeshin since last year. Former Chief Choi passed the 44th Judicial Examination in 2002 and joined the police in 2006 through a special recruitment. He served as head of the investigation division at the Bangbae Police Station in Seoul, Chief of the Hwacheon Police Station in Gangwon, and director of the Planning and Coordination Office at the National Police Agency. He opened a law practice in 2019 and is currently working as the team leader of the police investigation response team at the law firm Yulchon.
The National Police Agency will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of their job performance capabilities and report to the Commissioner General of the National Police Agency. Once the Commissioner General recommends one candidate, the appointment is made by the President after passing through the Minister of the Interior and Safety and the Prime Minister. The new Chief will succeed Nam Gu-jun, the inaugural Chief who retires on the 25th of next month, and will lead the National Investigation Headquarters (Guksubon) until 2025.
