[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] T'way Air announced on the 18th that it will introduce the Boeing 'B737-8' model, considered a next-generation eco-friendly aircraft.
The B737-8 model features advanced technologies such as new engines and winglets optimized for fuel efficiency. Compared to the currently operated equivalent model (B737-800), it reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions by about 14%, making it a highly fuel-efficient eco-friendly aircraft.
The seating capacity is the same as the B737-800, with 189 seats equipped with lightweight seats. It offers a more spacious and comfortable cabin environment with the Boeing Sky Interior and pivot-type overhead bins. Additionally, each seat is equipped with a personal device holder and USB charging port, enhancing passenger convenience for content viewing and more.
Moreover, compared to the currently operated model with the same number of seats, the maximum flight range has increased by over 1,000 km, enabling flights to Singapore, Indonesia, and Central Asia, facilitating route expansion.
T'way Air introduced the first B737-8 aircraft to Korea last month and is currently operating it on the Gimpo-Busan route. The second aircraft is scheduled to be introduced by the end of this month. It will be deployed for international flights in the future.
Currently, T'way Air operates a total of 30 aircraft (26 B737-800s, 3 A330-300s, and 1 B737-8). The B737-800 models to be returned will be gradually replaced with B737-8 models to modernize the fleet and participate in the global movement to reduce carbon emissions.
In addition, efforts to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions continue, including operating Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) systems that digitize various manuals, charts, and airport information instead of paper prints, minimizing onboard maintenance items (FAK), and operating a fuel management committee.
Furthermore, to strengthen ESG management, T'way Air is preparing to establish a system covering all areas of environment, society, and governance, and to form an ESG council led by the CEO responsible for policy development.
A T'way Air official stated, “We regard 2023 as the inaugural year of ESG management and will continue various activities such as reducing carbon emissions and fostering win-win relationships with stakeholders. We will also solidify a route network tailored to the characteristics of our short-, medium-, and long-haul aircraft to secure competitiveness.”
