Apple Releases New MacBook After 1 Year and 3 Months
Equipped with Next-Generation Chips 'M2 Pro' and 'M2 Max'
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] On the 17th (local time), Apple released a new MacBook Pro laptop equipped with its self-developed next-generation chips, the 'M2 Pro' and 'M2 Max.' This upgraded version of the MacBook Pro is the first release in 1 year and 3 months since October 2021.
The 'M2 Pro' and 'M2 Max' are upgraded chips compared to the M2. The 'M2' installed in the MacBook Pro is the successor to Apple's self-developed system-on-chip (SoC)?a highly integrated semiconductor that contains the entire system on a single chip?called 'M1,' which replaced the central processing units (CPUs) previously supplied by Intel.
Both chips perform 15.8 trillion operations per second. They feature up to 12-core CPUs and up to 19-core graphics processing units (GPUs), improving functionality over the previous model (M1 Pro), which had up to 10 CPU cores and 16 GPU cores. Apple explained, "The M2 Pro has 20% more transistors than the M1 Pro, enabling programs like Adobe Photoshop to run faster." The M2 Max supports up to 38 GPU cores.
The newly released MacBook Pro supports up to 96GB of memory for the 16-inch model and up to 64GB for the 14-inch model. The previous model offered 32GB of memory. Battery life for the MacBook Pro with next-generation chips has increased by one hour each: from 17 to 18 hours for the 14-inch model, and from 21 to 22 hours for the 16-inch model.
Along with the MacBook Pro, Apple also released the Mac Mini. The Mac Mini is equipped with both the M2 chip and the M2 Pro chip. The starting price for the MacBook Pro is $1,999 (2.47 million KRW) for the 14-inch model and $2,499 (3.09 million KRW) for the 16-inch model. The Mac Mini is priced at $599 (740,000 KRW), which is $100 less than before.
The new MacBook is available for order starting today in 27 countries worldwide. However, the release schedule for Korea has not yet been determined.
