[Asia Economy (Seongnam) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province will start providing allowances to the families of war veterans from this year. This initiative is also a campaign pledge of Seongnam Mayor Shin Sang-jin.
On the 17th, Seongnam City announced that it will pay a monthly welfare allowance of 100,000 KRW starting this year to the spouses of veterans who participated in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. To this end, the city amended the "Seongnam City Ordinance on the Treatment and Support for Independence Patriots and National Veterans" in December last year.
The recipients are spouses of deceased veterans who are aged 65 or older and have their registered address in Seongnam City as of the 1st of each month.
The city expects to provide welfare allowances to 600 people and has secured a related budget of 720 million KRW.
Eligible applicants can apply for the welfare allowance at the administrative welfare center of their local district office. Applications will be accepted intensively until the end of this month. Applicants must prepare identification, a copy of a bankbook in their name, and documents verifying that they are the spouse of a deceased veteran.
The welfare allowance will be paid from the month of application, and those already receiving the Veterans Honor Allowance (100,000 KRW) will not receive duplicate payments.
A city official explained, "Unlike other national veterans' families, the families of Korean War and Vietnam War veterans do not inherit veterans' status under the law, so when the veteran passes away, various allowances are discontinued," adding, "We decided to provide the welfare allowance to repay the sacrifices of veterans and to help stabilize the living conditions of their spouses."
