Gwangju Nam-gu Provides Free Installation of 'Cool Roofs' on Housing for Vulnerable Groups

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] “We offer free installation of cool roofs that lower indoor temperatures in summer by simply painting the rooftop white. Residents of Wolsan-dong, apply now.”

Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is conducting a cool roof support project for climate-vulnerable residents living in Wolsan-dong, the target area of the Heatwave Safety Village creation project.

According to Nam-gu on the 16th, a support project for climate-vulnerable groups to alleviate discomfort caused by severe heatwaves and tropical nights in summer will be carried out in Wolsan-dong, a densely populated old residential area.

This is to actively respond to climate change, protect the health of vulnerable residents, and reduce greenhouse gases through improved energy efficiency.

Nam-gu plans to invest 300 million KRW obtained through last year’s Ministry of Environment public contest project to install cool roofs free of charge on 26 houses in Wolsan-dong.

The support targets are single-family houses over 15 years old, and houses deemed unsuitable for cool roof installation after on-site inspection will be excluded from support.

Nam-gu will select houses for cool roof installation according to priority.

The first priority support targets are houses of basic livelihood security recipients, followed sequentially by low-income households, houses with disabled residents, and houses where single elderly residents aged 65 or older live.

Residents wishing to install cool roofs must visit the Wolsan-dong Administrative Welfare Center and submit an application form and supporting documents by February 3.

For other inquiries, contact the Environmental Ecology Division of Nam-gu Office.

A Nam-gu official stated, “Applying functional heat-blocking paint on rooftops can lower indoor temperatures, improve cooling efficiency, and reduce energy costs. We will accelerate the project to ensure a healthy life for climate-vulnerable residents living in Wolsan-dong.”
