Jung Jin-seok: "Next Year's General Election Will Be Fought with Yoon's Face... The Ruling Party Must Become One"

"Concerns Over Overheated Competition Among Jeondae Candidates"

[Asia Economy Reporters Hyunju Lee and Youngwon Kim] Jeong Jin-seok, Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, said on the 16th, "The general election in April next year will be a mid-term evaluation of President Yoon Seok-yeol," adding, "The ruling party must become united and of one mind, and the March party convention should be a place to solidify determination."

Chairman Jeong stated this during his opening remarks at the Emergency Response Committee meeting held at the National Assembly that day, saying, "The election will be fought based on President Yoon's image and achievements, but there are concerns about overheated competition among the (party convention) candidates."

He also said, "Even before the party convention has started, the words directed at each other feel sharp for comrades of the same party," and added, "I hope things proceed calmly."

Recently, the People Power Party has seen heated verbal battles ahead of the party convention. Pro-Yoon faction lawmakers within the party have criticized former lawmaker Na Kyung-won as the "second Yoo Seung-min" and "leader of the anti-Yoon faction," while former lawmaker Na fired back by calling the pro-Yoon faction lawmakers "the second Jinbak inspectors."

Chairman Jeong particularly emphasized, "The ruling party must become like conjoined twins, one body." He said, "U.S. presidents almost daily carve out time to call their leadership to the White House to discuss current issues and demand the realization of the president's intentions," adding, "It is normal for countries with a presidential system to operate this way. Therefore, this party convention must be a venue for unity and harmony."

He continued, "Those who aspire to become party leader should seek the choice of party members with a winning vision and methodology for the general election," and said, "In response to the Democratic Party's shield against corruption, we must build a unified front for the success of the Yoon Seok-yeol government."
