Jinju City Council Takes Steps Toward Human-Animal Coexistence

Visit to Daejeon Metropolitan City Animal Protection Center

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] The Economic and Welfare Committee of Jinju City Council in Gyeongnam is continuing its on-site efforts to create a city where humans and animals can live well together.

The Jinju City Stray Dog Shelter was established in 2005 in Jiphyeon-myeon with facilities to protect 40 stray dogs. Although it maintains the lowest natural death rate in Gyeongnam at 7%, due to the current increase in stray animals, it is protecting about 280 stray animals, far exceeding the appropriate protection capacity of 170 animals.

Accordingly, Jinju City is planning to build a Comprehensive Pet Support Center to improve stray animal protection facilities and foster a proper pet culture, and is currently conducting a basic plan establishment project.

In this regard, the Economic and Welfare Committee of Jinju City Council visited the Daejeon Metropolitan City Animal Protection Center, which is the first in the nation to be directly operated by a local government, implementing systematic stray animal protection management and policies to strengthen the animal registration system.

Upon visiting the Daejeon Metropolitan City Animal Protection Center, Chairman Yoon Seong-gwan requested the relevant officials, “To create facilities that coexist with residents, please hold explanatory meetings for residents to enhance communication, and work hard to dispel negative perceptions about the construction of the Jinju City Comprehensive Pet Support Center and establish a culture of living together with pets.”
