[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is gearing up to globalize the ‘20th Anniversary of the Nostalgic Chungjang Festival’ celebrating its coming of age this year.
On the 13th, Dong-gu held the 1st Chungjang Festival Planning Committee meeting chaired by Festival Chairman Kim Hyung-joo, reflecting on last year’s festival which attracted 600,000 visitors, and had an in-depth discussion on this year’s festival schedule and future plans.
This year’s festival is scheduled to take place over five days from October 5 to 9 at various locations including the May 18 Democracy Square.
Plans include ▲improving the global festival operation system ▲continuously hosting the ‘2nd Buskers World Cup IN Gwangju,’ another festival enjoyed by people worldwide ▲advancing core festival programs such as the ‘Chungjang Street Parade’ and the ‘World Food Culture Festival’ ▲strengthening promotional marketing expertise, aiming to establish Dong-gu as a ‘K-Culture Festival City’ that captures the attention of people around the world.
Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, “The Chungjang Festival, boasting a 19-year history, contributes annually to revitalizing the local economy and developing regional culture and arts, evolving into a global festival beyond Gwangju. We will do our best to develop new content so that this year’s coming-of-age festival can be successfully held and evolve into the Chungjang World Festival that captivates the attention of people worldwide.”
Meanwhile, the ‘19th Nostalgic Gwangju Chungjang World Festival’ held from October 13 to 17 last year achieved great success by winning the Gold Award in the ‘Signature Program’ category and the Bronze Award in the ‘Resident-led Festival’ category at the Pinnacle Awards hosted by the International Festivals & Events Association (IFEA World), as well as receiving the ‘Korea Festival Innovation City Award.’
