Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office Restores Honor to 200 Individuals Related to May 18 Incident

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office announced on the 12th that it has restored the honor of 200 citizens related to the May 18 Democratization Movement who stood against the military regime.


Since 2018, the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office has filed retrials ex officio for 147 people who were prosecuted and convicted for violating the Martial Law Act and other charges, seeking acquittals.


Among them, 141 people were acquitted by the court.

They had lived with the stigma of being criminals after protesting against the armed suppression by martial law troops, but have now been exonerated.


It was recognized that their actions were legitimate acts to protect the constitution and constitutional order.


Additionally, from 2021 to recently, the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office reopened cases for 53 people who had received non-prosecution dispositions and ruled that 'there was no crime.'


Compensation amounting to 760 million won was paid to those who had been detained before receiving the disposition.


A representative of the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office said, "We will continue efforts to restore the honor of those related to May 18 in cooperation with institutions such as the May 18 Foundation and organizations, Gwangju City, and the Army 31st Division."
