[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] On the 12th, about 30 key members and party officials belonging to the Democratic Party of Korea Gwangju Metropolitan City Party visited the Itaewon disaster citizen memorial altar installed near Noksapyeong Station in Yongsan-gu to conduct a picket campaign and volunteer activities.
The volunteer group stated, "Despite the revelation of the complacent response and lies of government ministries including the Ministry of the Interior and Safety during the national investigation process after the disaster, the top official, Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min, remains inactive," and added, "The Minister of the Interior and Safety should apologize and resign for the disaster in which 159 innocent lives were lost."
They continued, "Seeing groups near the citizen memorial altar mocking the victims and bereaved families with loudspeakers aroused our anger," and said, "A clear investigation into the 10·29 (Itaewon) disaster is the only way to prevent further tragedies."
Lee Byung-hoon, Chairman of the Gwangju City Party, emphasized, "More important than the National Assembly's efforts to uncover the truth is the continuous interest and participation of the people."
Meanwhile, since December, the Democratic Party's 17 city and provincial parties nationwide have been conducting relay volunteer activities at the citizen memorial altar to ensure a clear investigation into the 10·29 (Itaewon) disaster.
