2022 Year Provincial Military Units Rank 1 in 'Youth Ratio, Number of Marriages, Number of Births'
Gu In-mo, the governor of Geochang County, Gyeongnam, is discussing the implementation of various youth policies.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Geochang-gun, Gyeongnam Province, is accelerating the implementation of youth policies that strengthen the three core areas of ‘housing, jobs, and cultural welfare’ to achieve the vision of the 8th local government administration, “A Happy Geochang with Youth, A Happy Geochang Because of Youth,” starting with the first year of the Gyemyo year.
The county redefined youth policies and established an institutional foundation starting from the 7th local government administration to respond to population decline, regional extinction, and an aging society. Last year, it promoted various youth policies such as marriage congratulatory money, Didimdol savings accounts, pilot operation of the Youth Warehouse, and establishing a youth network base.
As a result, it achieved human and material infrastructure for youth and publicized the excellence of Geochang-gun’s youth policies both domestically and internationally by receiving the ‘Youth Dedication Policy Award’ from the Youth and Future Corporation.
In particular, as a result of focusing on youth policies as a population inflow measure and efforts to maintain a population of 60,000, the county achieved remarkable results, ranking first in the province’s county areas in youth ratio, number of marriages, and number of births.
The youth ratio is an indicator of regional revitalization, the number of marriages is a prerequisite for births, and the number of births represents the most important beginning for Geochang-gun’s future. These figures indicate a virtuous cycle toward youth and hope for Geochang’s future.
In 2023, the county plans to continue supporting activities to strengthen capabilities such as Didimdol savings accounts, marriage congratulatory money, events, forums, untact marketing, and club support in line with the three core areas of ‘housing, jobs, and cultural welfare,’ while maintaining policy continuity.
Additionally, the Geochang-gun-Jongno-gu win-win program, which started its first meeting at the end of last year, and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s Youth Village project will be newly promoted based on youth proposals.
The youth rental housing and startup support center, which are pledges of the 8th local government administration, will form a youth design team from January to promote the entire process from planning to operation with youth participation. The Geochang-style youth allowance is currently undergoing social security consultation procedures with the Ministry of Health and Welfare for implementation in the first half of the year.
Furthermore, promotion of the marriage congratulatory money, which contributed to the county’s first place in the number of marriages and is the largest support in the province, will be strengthened. The youth Didimdol savings account, which received the most interest and response from young people, is scheduled to start accumulation from February.
The youth network, recruiting its third term this year, received applications from 45 people, the highest number ever, confirming strong willingness to participate in youth policies. After pre-education and exchanges, the inauguration ceremony will be held in February, and activities will begin.
Along with this, the county will newly promote a youth activity point system to activate youth participation.
County Governor Goo In-mo said, “Our county is implementing youth policies ahead of other local governments to counter population decline and regional extinction. We will create a vibrant and youthful Geochang where young people want to live by strengthening youth capabilities, establishing a foundation for independence, and revitalizing the region. We will gather the wisdom and passion of youth to implement realistic policies to achieve first place in the province’s county population.”
