[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Among the police superintendent promotion candidates announced by the National Police Agency on the 3rd, those from the Yeongnam region overwhelmingly outnumbered others.
According to the '2023 Superintendent Promotion Appointment Candidates Analysis' data submitted by the National Police Agency to Rep. Lee Hyung-seok (Gwangju Buk-gu Eul) on the 11th, out of 22 superintendent promotion candidates, 12 (55%) are from Yeongnam.
There are 6 candidates from Gyeongnam, 4 from Daegu, and 2 from Gyeongbuk. Next, 5 candidates (2 from Daejeon, 3 from Chungbuk) are from the Chungcheong region.
On the other hand, only 2 candidates, which is one-sixth of the Yeongnam number, are from Honam, and Seoul and Incheon each had only 1 candidate.
This superintendent promotion personnel appointment was the first since the Yoon Seok-yeol administration forcibly established the Police Bureau under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. Therefore, it was widely regarded as a gauge of the current government's police personnel policy.
Rep. Lee Hyung-seok criticized, "This superintendent appointment can only be defined as a personnel appointment biased toward the Yeongnam region, which is the support base of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration," adding, "In particular, there is suspicion that the so-called 'Yun Hae-gwan' faction exerted strong influence through the Police Bureau of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety."
He also emphasized, "Since there were allegations of regional bias in the police superintendent appointments made on the 10th, we plan to review the overall police personnel appointments."
