[Asia Economy (Hongseong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The number of traffic accident fatalities in the Chungnam region has recorded an all-time low.
According to the Chungnam Autonomous Police Committee and Chungnam Police Agency on the 11th, the number of traffic accident fatalities in the jurisdiction last year was 232, a decrease of 42 (15.3%) from the previous year (274).
This is the lowest number since traffic accident statistics began in 1977, and in Chungnam’s case, it was the second largest decrease among the 15 city and provincial police agencies nationwide last year, following Jeonnam (53 deaths, 20.8%↓).
The number of traffic accident fatalities in the Chungnam region has been steadily decreasing from 500 to 600 in the 1970s to 538 in 2005, 501 in 2010, 394 in 2015, and 267 in 2020.
Chungnam also recorded a total of 8,241 traffic accidents last year, down 224 cases (2.6%) from 8,465 the previous year, and the number of injured was 11,962, a decrease of 293 (2.4%) from 12,255 the previous year.
Earlier, the committee focused on expanding the installation of traffic safety facilities to prevent speeding and ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians, as well as projects to improve the traffic culture index through collaboration with related organizations last year.
Chairman Kwon Hee-tae said, “This year, we will strengthen cooperation with related traffic organizations to simultaneously improve facilities, promote publicity and education, and intensively crack down on accident-causing behaviors, focusing on reducing traffic accident fatalities and improving the traffic culture index in the region.”
