U.S. House Establishes 'Bipartisan China Task Force'... Signals Tough Stance on China

[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Haeyoung] On the 10th (local time), the U.S. House of Representatives decided to establish a special committee within the House to seek ways to win the competition against China. With more than half of the Democratic members voting in favor, the 'Bipartisan China Special Committee' was launched.

The House passed a resolution to form the 'Special Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party' with 365 votes in favor and 65 against.

The establishment of the China Special Committee in the House was a Republican pledge during last year's midterm elections. All Republicans voted in favor, and among 212 Democratic members, 146 voted in favor and 65 against.

The special committee will have the authority to conduct investigations related to the economic, technological, and security developments of the Chinese Communist Party and its competition with the United States, and to submit policy recommendations. It may also hold public hearings during the investigation process. The investigation results and policy recommendations can be submitted to the House and relevant standing committees and will be made public.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy appointed Republican Representative Mike Gallagher (Wisconsin) as the chair of the special committee.

Speaker McCarthy stated, "This committee will be a bipartisan committee, not a partisan one," and added, "It will address issues such as bringing jobs back from China, protecting intellectual property rights, and strengthening supply chains."
