Gwangyang Economic Free Zone Authority Launches Special Monitoring of Environmental Pollutant Emissions During Lunar New Year Holiday

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] The Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Authority (Commissioner Song Sang-rak, hereinafter referred to as Gwangyang Economic Authority) announced that it will conduct special monitoring of facilities to prevent illegal environmental pollution discharges that may occur during the Lunar New Year holiday period.

The special monitoring period for environmental pollutant discharges during the Lunar New Year holiday is from January 11 to 27, 2023, lasting a total of 17 days. Before the holiday, workplaces will be guided in advance and encouraged to conduct self-inspections. During the holiday, patrols around industrial complex discharge sites and rivers will be strengthened, and a situation room will be operated to prepare for environmental pollution accidents.

The monitoring targets will focus on facilities suspected of pollution around industrial complexes and rivers within the jurisdiction. The situation room will respond immediately to reports received during the Lunar New Year holiday period, and strong measures will be taken against serious violations in accordance with relevant laws.

A representative of the Gwangyang Economic Authority stated, “During the vulnerable period of environmental pollutant management over the Lunar New Year holiday, we will do our best to prevent environmental pollution accidents and manage the environment so that visitors to the region can spend the holiday in a pleasant environment.”

Meanwhile, there are 89 pollutant-emitting workplaces within the jurisdiction (26 common, 35 air, 28 wastewater), and the authority plans to promote year-round self-inspections for each workplace.
