'Olympics of Economics' World Economists Conference to be Held in Seoul in 2025

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The Econometric Society World Congress (ESWC) will be held in Seoul in August 2025.

According to the Korean Economic Association on the 10th, the Econometric Society decided at its board meeting held on the 5th (local time in the United States) in New Orleans, USA, to hold the 2025 Econometric Society World Congress in Seoul.

The conference will take place from August 18 to 22, 2025, and it is expected that 3,000 to 4,000 participants will attend based on the number of paper presenters.

The Econometric Society World Congress is an academic conference held once every five years by the Econometric Society and is considered the Olympics for economists worldwide. It is the largest academic conference in economics globally and includes many Nobel laureates among its participants.

Last year, the Korean Economic Association formed a preparation committee within the association to bid for hosting the Econometric Society World Congress. Professors Hwang Yoon-jae and Jang Yong-seong of Seoul National University served as co-chairs of the preparation committee, with participation from five universities including Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Korea University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Sogang University.

President Yoon Suk-yeol, Deputy Prime Minister for Economy Choo Kyung-ho, and Deputy Prime Minister for Education Park Soon-ae sent letters of support for the event, and companies such as Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor Company, SK Group, Korean Air, Amorepacific, and the Korea Tourism Organization also offered their support.

The Korean Economic Association stated, "This will be an important opportunity to elevate the global status of the Korean economics community and to take a leap forward as a world-class academic society." It also noted that supporting the participation of promising economists from underdeveloped countries and the Third World will enhance the nation's prestige.
