LG Uplus Customer Data Breach Affects 180,000... "Actively Cooperating with Police Investigation"

[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] Personal information of 180,000 LG Uplus customers has been leaked, and the police are investigating the cause of the leak.

On the 10th, LG Uplus announced on its website, "We have recognized that some customers' personal information has been leaked," and added, "Please be cautious as your valuable information may be used inappropriately."

The leaked personal information concerns a total of 180,000 people and is reported to include customers' names, dates of birth, and phone numbers. However, LG Uplus explained that financial information related to payments was not leaked.

LG Uplus became aware of the information leak on the 2nd. The company requested an investigation from the police cyber investigation unit and the Korea Internet & Security Agency the following day. A company official explained, "It took time to verify unclear data and identify the customers."

The police are reportedly focusing their investigation more on the possibility of external hacking rather than an insider act within the company.

An LG Uplus official stated, "We are notifying the affected customers regarding the information leak, and a system for inquiry through the website is also in operation," adding, "We will actively cooperate with related agencies to ensure a swift investigation in the future." They further added, "We plan to strengthen the monitoring system and prepare measures to prevent recurrence based on the investigation results from related agencies."
